Creative Portrait photo shoot

In-home creative portrait shoot ~ Philli O Photography

Another in-home photoshoot for a client showing what is possible with the careful use of back lighting. By seating the model close to the camera and moving the feature lamp further away, the distance between the two is converted to negative space. An LED ring light provided the necessary side lighting, while the model held a small wreath of ferns wrapped in golden LED string while concealing the battery pack in her hand.

  • Camera: Olympus E-M10MarkIV
  • Aperture: f/22
  • Exposure 1/6 second
  • Focal lens: 28 mm
  • ISO-200

This front lighting achieved the Rembrandt style shadow effect on the model's face, while the light meter on the camera was deliberately under-exposed to accentuate the mood. The theme was 'golden', and the makeup complete with tan suede jacket blended the whole concept together.

The chosen image was then edited using Adobe Photoshop to correct the exposure to the skin tones without altering the background lighting in the image.

Starting down the path of creative portraiture is a bit like falling down a rabbit hole. It opens the senses to new photographic ideas and techniques... but also creates a list of gadgets and gizmos that I now simply must get that can very quickly add up!

Hopefully something will change in the near future to enable me to afford some more equipment and continue to expand this area of my work.
