Hobby Money - commercial scanography

Hobby Money ~ Philli Overton

Here is a beautiful example of using flatbed scanography for commercial photography. The assignment was to create a nostalgic art piece using a flatbed scanner for the capture. In this instance, I channeled my model railway roots to create a mock-up of a 1950's inspired hobby magazine.

The components of the image need to be stacked in mirror-reverse for the scanography capture to work ~ Philli O Photography

Look closely at the finished image, and you'll notice the year 1959 printed on the fake U.S. Dollar bills, the 1950's era model coal hopper and four strategically placed scale tennis player figurines that draw the eye through the art piece. Amongst the composition is a bunch of model railway related parts sourced from my scrap box. The image had to be sized and laid-out in mirror reverse onto the scanner screen, and to accentuate the background I laid a sheet of crumpled brown paper over the top. The finished image at top was printed on A5 size high quality semi-gloss photo paper and selected as my Minor Portfolio piece for the TAFE Queensland Mid-Year Exhibition in June 2024.
